glacier milk

a spatial semantics for the web · laws v0.3 · 2026

paradigm definition · scene grammar · reference implementation

premise

glacier milk is meltwater carrying rock flour — stone ground by the movement of ice over bedrock.

the water carries a trace of that pressure.

softness is not the absence of structure. it is structure after pressure.

the document begins there.

system

entities 6 — medium · presence · membrane
             annotation · observer · light
laws 10, each with its consequence and its lint
verbs 3 — drift · bearing · summons
lint 14 mechanical rules, plus one judged by hand
strata membrane — DOM text, flat to the eye
water — GPU scene, no text within it
probe probe zero · one tank, one observer
status draft, for pressure-testing

the paradigm

01 · the constraint

a place to return to, before a word to call it by.

the study begins with something recognized through its relations: near this, behind that, not yet named.

position, depth, proximity — enough to find it again?

02 · the structural decision

six entities, ten laws, three verbs. drift, bearing, summons: exploration, orientation, retrieval.

words live on the glass. the world lives in the water.

the water — a shared spatial medium. the membrane holds the observer's annotations, flat to the eye, separate from the rendered scene.

each observer has a membrane. a name can belong to one observer without being written into the world they share.

depth changes visibility continuously. a presence recedes as it moves deeper, clarifies as it approaches.

the laws ask for stable relations among presences. an arrangement that might become familiar enough to return to before naming it.

the presence can remain. word —— unresolved.

03 · what it rejects

within this model, navigation is movement through one medium. no route stacks, tab bars, or page transitions. leaving is recession; returning is surfacing.

annotations do not enter three-dimensional space. their position can follow a presence; their text stays face-on.

motion settles without overshoot. no rendered cursors or avatars in the shared medium. co-presence is not represented by tracking another observer's pointer.

the specification names recurring failures. an implementation can be checked against them.

04 · evidence

the glacier milk probe: pale blue medium, presences at different depths, and the three navigation verbs on the membrane.
probe zero — the resting view
the summons state, with a named presence brought toward the surface.
summons — a presence called by name
a presence previously labeled with an ellipsis now carries the private name mofu。.
private annotation — a name added by the observer
a summons with no matching referent; the membrane displays “light gathers nowhere.”
summons — no matching referent
the hub interface with four presences, annotations on the membrane, instrumentation, and a summons control.
the hub — an implementation of the paradigm
the probe at phone width, with annotations on the membrane over the spatial view.
probe zero — mobile

05 · what it cost

familiar website navigation — set aside. a visitor has to learn how to move, return, retrieve.

the first minute has no handrail.

the laws remain a draft. mechanical checks can examine parts of an implementation. whether someone finds their way requires another kind of evidence.

the public membrane remains an open hypothesis. its written invalidation test: observers anchor to labels and lose their bearing.

that test requires strangers in the tank. there are none yet.

the probe shows how the space behaves. whether it becomes a place someone can find again — still a question.

nothing is hidden. things are deep.
